The evolution of octahedral rotations of orthorhombic LaVO3 in superlattices with cubic SrVO3
نویسنده
چکیده
We have studied the octahedral rotations in LaVO3/SrVO3 superlattices, keeping the thickness of the orthorhombic LaVO3 layers constant and increasing the thickness of cubic SrVO3 layers. We have found that for a small thickness of SrVO3, the octahedral rotations in LaVO3 are maintained, while for an increasing thickness, these rotations are suppressed. This observation cannot be explained by purely elastic e ects due to the lattice mismatch between the two materials, but the absence of rotations in SrVO3 is a crucial ingredient, illustrating the concept of interface engineering of octahedral rotations. Mapping electronic reconstruction at the metal-insulator interface in LaVO3/SrVO3 heterostructures
A (LaVO3)6/(SrVO3)3 superlattice is studied with a combination of sub-Å resolved scanning transmission electron microscopy and monochromated electron energy-loss spectroscopy. The V oxidation state is mapped with atomic spatial resolution enabling us to investigate electronic reconstruction at the LaVO3/SrVO3 interfaces. Surprisingly, asymmetric charge distribution is found at adjacent chemical...
متن کاملControl of octahedral rotations via octahedral connectivity in an epitaxially strained [1 u.c.//4 u.c.] LaNiO3/LaGaO3 superlattice
Media New York 2016 ABSTRACT For ABO3 perovskites, the magnetic and electronic properties couple strongly to the BO6 octahedral rotations and distortions. Therefore, precise control of the octahedral rotations and distortions via epitaxial strain and interfacial octahedral connectivity has become the key for engineering novel functionalities in ABO3 heterostructures and superlattices. In this p...
متن کاملLocal octahedral rotations and octahedral connectivity in epitaxially strained LaNiO3/LaGaO3 superlattices
For ABO3 perovskites, octahedral rotations and distortions couple strongly to the functional properties. However, in short period perovskite superlattices, the characterization of the octahedral behavior remains challenging due to the local structural variations of the BO6 octahedra. By aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, we investigated the local octahedral r...
متن کاملPhase stability of CaSiO3 perovskite at high pressure and temperature: Insights from ab initio molecular dynamics
We report the dynamics of the structure of CaSiO3 perovskite from ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations at high pressure (P up to 130 GPa) and high temperature (T up to 5000 K). Our calculations indicate three separate stability fields: orthorhombic, tetragonal and cubic, with the tetragonal phase dominating the pressure and temperature region between room temperature and 4000 K. The...

The room-temperature crystal structures of six A(2)M(3+)M(5+)O(6) ordered perovskites have been determined from neutron and X-ray powder diffraction data. Ba(2)YNbO(6) adopts the aristotype high-symmetry cubic structure (space group Fm\overline 3m, Z = 4). The symmetries of the remaining five compounds were lowered by octahedral tilting distortions. Out-of-phase rotations of the octahedra about...
